The genealogical chart below illustrates the interconnectedness of the Forstall family of Ringville and the Strange family of Aylwardstown, tracing their descent from Nicholas FitzGerald of Gurteens Castle and Nicholas Aylward of Aylwardstown.
Further significant relationships are conveyed on the chart, including the maternal ancestry of Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman (1802–1865) through his mother, Xaveria Strange, granddaughter of Peter Strange Sr. of Dublin and Aylwardstown and Xaveria Murphy of Waterford, the latter being the sister of John Murphy Sr. (who married Catherine Elliot) and aunt of John Murphy Jr. of Málaga, a wealthy merchant trader (John Jr.’s pedigree is given in GO MS 164, pp. 60-61), who was conferred the title of Hidalgo in 1788 and was the father of Colonel Juan Murphy, who partnered with William Duff Gordon (1772–1823) to form the trading house Gordon, Murphy & Co.
This chart below is included in The Principal Wills and Pedigrees of the Lords of Kilferagh and House of Carrickcloney, scheduled for release in early 2026. For the paternal ancestry of Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman and his kinship within the Waterford Catholic Merchant community click here.
Note: That Cardinal Wiseman’s great-grandmother Xaveria Murphy (see chart below) was the sister of John Murphy Sr. of Waterford, who married Catherine Elliot, can be seen in the baptism of John Sr. and Catherine’s son Henry Murphy at Trinity Within, Waterford, on 9 December 1739, where Xaveria served as godmother and is recorded as soror patris (“the father’s sister”); she also served as godmother to her sister Mary Murphy and her husband John Merry’s son, Gerald, baptized 1 January 1740 at the same parish; the pedigree of the couple’s grandson Joseph Merry of Seville is given in GO MS, pp. 92–93. John Murphy Sr. witnessed his sister Xaveria’s marriage to Peter Strange Sr. on 23 October 1740 at Trinity Within, Waterford.
