Forstall or Forrestal History

Sir Mark Forstall

Irish Gentleman, Jacobite, and Naval Commander

Born in Ireland in the 1600s, Sir Mark Forstall began his life at sea at just twelve. He rose to prominence as a shipowner, operating vessels between Ireland, France, and England, before abandoning commerce to serve the Jacobite cause. In 1716 he commanded the Forerunner, the vessel entrusted with transporting James VIII and III from Scotland to Gravelines following the failed 1715 Rising. His successful execution of this critical mission earned him a knighthood and set the stage for a distinguished career as a captain in the Spanish Navy. The piece below will appear in The Principal Wills and Pedigrees of the Lords of Kilferagh and House of Carrickcloney, to be released in early 2026.
